Introduction to Hip Hop fundamentals is a dance performance class designed to help you achieve
training in Hip Hop techniques as well as an awareness and appreciation of the biomechanical
principles of movement in this time-space art. Your body will be trained to reach its most energetic
and balanced state in commercial Hip Hop that is diverse, stimulating and fun. The classes are often
exhausting but challenging physically and creatively. The class takes place in a learning environment
that encourages you to express and share your ideas both verbally and in movement. The language of
dance will be broadened. In addition, the class is an opportunity to heighten your interest and
appreciation of the other arts: music, art, architecture, drama, literature, poetry among others.
Historical and modern perspectives of Hip Hop will be primarily explored. The cross-breeding taking
place in the world of dance today influences the styles and techniques of modern day Hip Hop dance.
Hip Hop is raw and edgy often grounded in percussive rhythms. This particular style of Jazz is infused
with high energy and urban influences. You will be challenged to develop your own philosophy of Hip
Hop and how it influences other styles of dance. Hip Hop as a culture will also be explored in realation
to how it impacts pop culture today.

Course Description: This introductory singing class focuses on developing fundamental vocal skills including proper breath support, posture, vocal range exploration, and basic vocal exercises, while building confidence in singing technique.

Performance lab: students are immersed in the works of individual composers and lyricists. Class is a survey of the works and styles of major musical theatre artists including Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd weber, Rodgers & Hammerstein, and Leonard Bernstein. This lab is designed to workshop musical scenes or group projects for performance at the end of the session. Work becomes more complex over the course of the session and requires that students take on both leading and ensemble roles in performance.
